Extemporaneous Coordination in Specialist Teams: The Familiarity Complementarity

چکیده

Team production is ubiquitous in the economy, but managing teams effectively remains a challenge for many organizations. This paper studies how familiarity among teammates influences performance of specialist teams, relative to nonspecialist teams. Applying theories team contexts where members coordinate interdependent activities extemporaneously, we develop predictions about factors that shift marginal returns specialization along two dimensions familiarity: social and functional familiarity. We test our hypotheses context Defence Ancients 2 (DOTA2), major e-sports game where, some formats, players are exogenously assigned five-person After analyzing nearly 6.5 million matches, find relatively more successful when socially functionally familiar with one another. The results suggest plug-and-play perspective on incomplete; rather, complements dynamic environments extemporaneously. Shared Mental Models, Familiarity, and Coordination: A Multi-Method Study of Distributed Software Teams

Coordination is important in large-scale software development because of the many people involved and the complex dependencies present in software tasks. Even small improvements in productivity can lead to substantial cost savings and competitive advantage. But despite great technological advances in software engineering and collaboration tools in recent years, coordination in software developm...

Co-Worker Complementarity and the Stability of Top Management Teams∗

We analyze changes in the composition of top management teams when a key member of the team (the CEO) departs. Coordination and Adaptation in Impromptu Teams

Coordinating a team of autonomous agents is one of the major challenges in building effective multiagent systems. Many techniques have been devised for this problem, and coordinated teamwork has been demonstrated even in highly dynamic and adversarial environments. A key assumption of these techniques, though, is that the team members are developed together as a whole. In many multiagent scenar...
